Believe it or not, the determination of whether your water is hard or soft is really down to where you live in the UK.

Large parts of Britain are affected by hard water – which explains why roughly half the homes across the country are subjected to it.

Just by looking at water, it’s impossible to tell whether it is either hard or soft. Other than it should be virtually clear when it is flowing from your taps, that’s really all you can say on first sight.

A water softener is designed to do two jobs – to soften your water and to regenerate itself so that it can carry on softening water for years to come.

All water softeners do the same thing – at least they should do – which is to provide softened water. This happens through a process known as ion exchange which, basically, turns hard water soft. The quality, reliability and functionality of the product, will generally determine how much your water softener will cost.  

If you have a water softener installed in your home, the likelihood is that your water supply will be used for all your everyday use – including as drinking water.

There’s nothing to suggest that glugging it down is harmful for you. Nevertheless, it’s worth bearing in mind how water is softened, which can be a bit off putting for some people.
