A water softener is designed to do two jobs – to soften your water and to regenerate itself so that it can carry on softening water for years to come.

The “ion exchange” process
At the point the water softener is installed, water from the main supply is directed through it. The tanks in the softener contain millions of microscopic resin beads. Each bead contains sodium ions or a negative charge. The hard water flow comprises positively charged calcium and magnesium minerals which are attracted to the negatively charged ions in the beads.
This process of removing the calcium and magnesium minerals is known as “ion exchange”. Once the exchange has taken place, you have softened water!
Water softener regeneration
The amount of water you use in your property will determine the regularity with which the softener will need to “regenerate”. Regeneration is the process of flushing off the magnesium and calcium ions that are attached to the resin beads. This is done with salt solution, which is why water softeners need to be topped up with salt supply.
A metering system automatically lets the softener know when it’s time to regenerate. This is normally programmed to take place during the night and lasts around 10 minutes, typically happening every 5-7 days.
